Glass as Building Material

glasshouse.jpgGlass has long been a material of choice when it comes to walls and furnishings due to its durability and subtle beauty. Glass comes in many forms and finishes (sand blasted, etched, textured, etc.) and they can be used for just about any surface. For counter tops and doors, try to get hold of safety/tempered glass that shatters into small pieces instead of the sharp shards normal glass turns into. The sharp shards can cause serious injuries if they happen to fall on you or your guests. Love glass but also privacy; try specialty glass that turns opaque at the flip of a switch. It gives you instant privacy good for bedroom windows and doors. There are even armored glass panes you can use for seemingly easy to break in doors yet would need something less than an explosion to break. They are made up of alternating layers of polycarbonate plastics and glass which prevents them from breaking and sending shards into the house. They are similar to armored glass but are designed to deter thieves and burglars, not bullets.
